In a whirlwind debut, “Twisters” has taken the box office by storm, raking in a staggering $80.5 million domestically on its opening weekend. This modern-day disaster flick, starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones as vigilante storm chasers, has officially kicked off the summer blockbuster season with a bang and it has got a global attention with a massive footfall this season.

While the cast has been careful to distance “Twisters” from the label of a sequel to the 1996 hit “Twister,” and they have successfully done it; its box office triumph has naturally sparked questions about potential future installments. When pressed on the possibility of another chapter, Edgar-Jones quipped to answer that saying, “They’d have to keep adding ‘s’s to the end of the word ‘Twister.’

While the main protagonist Powell, riding high on a string of recent successes, took a more measured approach while saying, “That’s really up to the audience with a movie like this,” just few days before its premier. “If the audience proves there’s a hunger there, then we have an amazing team of people that will always figure out how to make another story.”

And hunger there certainly is. “Twisters” now boasts the third-biggest opening weekend of the year 2024, trailing only behind animated powerhouse “Inside Out 2” and sci-fi epic “Dune: Part Two.” This impressive showing leaves the door wide open for Powell’s Tyler, a reckless social media influencer, and Edgar-Jones’ Kate, a brainy meteorologist, to potentially don their storm-chasing gear once more.

However, not everyone in the cast is keen on the idea of a possible sequel or prequel. Katy O’Brian, who plays Dani in Tyler’s tornado-wrangling crew, expressed reservations. “I always feel like when a movie is just really well done and doesn’t need a sequel, we probably shouldn’t do it.” Yet, she pragmatically added, “I know that people follow the money.”

Brandon Perea, who portrays Boone in the film, offered an alternative angle. “What if we do a prequel?” he suggested, expressing interest in exploring the origins of the wranglers’ relationships. O’Brian conceded that a prequel “would be cool” but maintained that the current film feels “really complete.”

While it’s fairly square that whatever to be made, Powell’s involvement would likely be crucial for any potential sequel, given his current status as Hollywood’s golden boy. His recent hot streak, including hits like “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Anyone But You,” and “Hit Man,” has catapulted him to the top of studio wish lists.

When asked about his decision to join “Twisters,” Powell revealed his approach to selecting projects. “Just like this movie, you sort of have to go with your instinct on things, you know, it’s part science, part instinct,” he explained. “I’m trying to, right now career-wise, trust my gut and my instinct and going, like, if I wanna see this movie, I feel like other people want to see it too.”

As “Twisters” continues to sweep audiences off their feet, only time will tell if this storm will gather strength for another round. For now, moviegoers can bask in the thrill of this meteorological spectacle that’s taking the summer box office by storm.
